GST, HST and provincial taxes
In Canada the tax follows the province or territory where the supply is made. Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island charge the harmonized sales tax (HST) as one rate. Elsewhere GST applies, plus PST in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, RST in Manitoba and QST in Quebec, each worked out on the price before tax.
What an invoice must show depends on its total, because your client needs it to claim input tax credits. The checklist switches between the under-$100, $100 and $500 tiers automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Which tax rate goes on a Canadian invoice?
The rate follows the province or territory of supply, not where you are based. Pick the province and the generator applies GST, HST, or GST with PST, RST or QST. HST prints as one combined rate.
What does my client need to claim input tax credits?
Under $100: your name, the date and the total. From $100: also your GST/HST registration number and the tax charged. From $500: also the client's name, the payment terms and a description of each supply. The checklist follows these tiers.
Can I issue the invoice in French?
Yes. Choose French or bilingual French/English. Sellers in Quebec start with a bilingual document.
I am a small supplier. What do I do?
Choose "Not registered (small supplier)". The invoice then shows no GST/HST.
Do you store my invoices?
No. Your invoice is sent to our server only to build the preview and the PDF, and the PDF is deleted within an hour. Your business details, draft and recent clients are saved in your own browser so you don't have to type them again; "Clear my data" removes them.
