VAT invoices in the UK
If you are VAT registered, a VAT invoice must carry the details HMRC lists in VAT Notice 700/21; the checklist follows that list and relaxes for simplified invoices of £250 or less. Choose the rate per line: standard 20%, reduced 5%, zero-rated or exempt. Reverse-charge, outside-the-scope and export invoices print the matching note and charge no VAT.
Limited companies and LLPs can add their company number, place of registration and registered office to the footer. From April 2029, invoices between VAT-registered businesses are due to move to structured e-invoices; nothing changes for now.

Frequently asked questions
What must a UK VAT invoice show?
A unique number, the time of supply and issue date, your name, address and VAT number, the customer's name and address, a description, and per line the quantity, unit price, VAT rate and net amount, then the net total and total VAT (VAT Notice 700/21). The checklist tracks each item.
When can I use a simplified invoice?
When the total including VAT is £250 or less. The checklist relaxes the client address and per-line details below that amount.
I invoice in euros or dollars. What changes?
Total VAT must also be shown in sterling. Enter the exchange rate and the invoice adds a "Total tax in GBP" line.
Does it handle the construction reverse charge?
Yes. Choose "Domestic reverse charge" and the invoice charges no VAT and prints the reverse charge note. Your client's VAT number is then required.
I am not VAT registered. Can I still use it?
Yes. Choose "Not VAT registered": the document is a plain invoice with no VAT.
Do you store my invoices?
No. Your invoice is sent to our server only to build the preview and the PDF, and the PDF is deleted within an hour. Your business details, draft and recent clients are saved in your own browser so you don't have to type them again; "Clear my data" removes them.
